Questions Patients Ask About Root Canals

  • When does a tooth actually need to come out?

    Not every damaged or painful tooth needs to be extracted, but some do. If a tooth is too broken to restore, severely infected, impacted, or threatening surrounding teeth, extraction is often the most straightforward path to getting you out of pain. We'll always tell you honestly whether it's the right call before doing anything.

  • Can I replace the tooth after it's extracted?

    Yes, and we'd love to help with that. Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing a single tooth, and Dr. Johnson places them at our main site, dentcarenow.com. We can coordinate the timing so the emergency extraction here flows into the permanent replacement there without you having to figure it out alone.

  • What happens if I don't get a root canal?

    An infected tooth won't get better on its own. Left untreated, the infection can spread, the pain gets worse, and you may eventually lose the tooth entirely (and need an extraction plus a replacement). A root canal now is almost always easier and less expensive than the alternatives later.

  • Do I need a crown after a root canal?

    In most cases, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth and restores its strength. A tooth that has had a root canal is more brittle and prone to fracture without a crown protecting it.
